Fully Accessible Body: An Autonomous Hologram Show
BBB_ (Alla Popp & Alexander Sahm)
A research on a live-show experience where the real performers are replaced with a hologram, extending our physical capacities to do more of our beloved, but underpaid work and to create for the audience technologically enhanced real live-show experience.
Fully Accessible Body : Inside the Holograms’ Head
With Fully Accessible Body project, we, BBB_, research on a live-performance experience where the presence of the real-body performers (us) is not necessary. In particular, we question how can we, performers and artists, extend our physical capacities to do our beloved, but underpaid work and still be able to create for the audience a feeling of a live-show with the help of digital tools available on the consumer market.
The core tools in this project is a HoloLens and various forms of Holograms. It receives a body feedback of the audience via customised pulse sensors. The pulse rate is sent to HoloLens and Ableton in a live-stream, which algorithmically influences the performance/movements of the holograms seen through the HoloLens and the intensity and the composition of the soundtrack in Ableton.
In this artistic research, since the project launch in March 2018, we already had few development stages, presenting this project at the dgtl fmnsm festival in Hellerau - European Center for the Arts Dresden, Festival der junge Talente in Frankfurter Kunstverein and at Transeuropa Fluid Festival in Hildesheim and other events and locaions. For each show we have been consistently speculating with various questions like “where is a difference between an interactive installation and a live-show”, “what role does the degree of expertise in digital technologies play in perception of a live-show which requires a usage of certain amount of wearable gadgets”, “what are the relations between our physical bodies and identities to our interactive digital copies (holograms)” and “how big is a role of mainstream/social media in constructing an image of a digital pop-idol (like Hatsune Miku)”
With experiences collected, we assume that the audience’s excitement, engagement and belief are very strong emotional stimulators which compensate all possible situative inconveniences caused by any software, hardware or other issues. When our digital copies were created, we realised an inevitability of distancing our personalities from their images and an opportunity to shape their vacant identities to become “ideal” pop-stars based on audiences’ wishes, beliefs, opinions, perceptions and preferences. The first step was made as the Holograms were interviewed by KVTV Collective and published on social media, where the questions of the interviewers were giving a direction for the answers content, which, in turn, were the first inputs for their identities construction.
In the Drone Dancing Exhibition we would like to, on one hand continue our research-based work where we like to experiment, and on the other hand, provide the visitors/audience a certain holograms-based live-show experience. In which form and scale it would take place, depends on the budget and location capacities. It can be as small as a AI chat with holograms, or a showroom with holograms performing through a hololens with a pulse sensor, or a live show performed by us physically, together with holograms based on audiences emotional states.
Since this project has a lot of aspects to research on and experiment with, for making a decision about the projects final form we would like to stay in a discourse with the festival and other artists to hear what works best and makes most sense for the Drone Visions.
We didn’t find an option for uploading pictures and it is very difficult to explain how it works without any visual support, so please see following links for some visuals:

BBB_ is a post-digital cross disciplinary project, working on the intersection of music, performance, art, design and contemporary philosophy. It was founded by Alla Poppersoni and Alexander Sahm in early 2015. The project works in live performance and installation format, experiments with digital voices, natural language processing, brain stimulating music and interactive visuals, creating special atmosphere and a scenography for each piece. With Utopian and Dystopian setups, through experimental sound, intense electronic music and spoken word, artists try to confront the spectator with a situation when human and inhuman life forms merge, speculating on various states of mind, relationships and self-perception, altered by socially and emotionally intelligent digital technologies.

We would love to get in exchange with other drones about possibilities of the autonomous live performance. Software (Unity, Max MSP, Open Frameworks) and hardware (body sensors) masters, conceptual and structural thinkers are welcome, as well as performers!
Congratulations! You've stumbled upon something special. This Drone Visions is where drones dreams together.
